In 2009, the British Retail Consortium and the Chief Fire Officers' Association (CFOA) launched the Retail and Fire Key Authority Partnerships (RAFKAP) to ensure BRC members are committed to high standards of customer and employee safety.
Meanwhile, according to insurance giant Aviva retail premises figure prominently in fire loss statistics and range in size from corner shops to retail warehouses and department stores.
Although the most common cause of fire in retail stores is arson there are other common causes of fire. Aviva, the BRC and the CFOA all agree that fire suppression systems are the most effective way of protecting, staff, customers and property in the event of a fire.
In March 2013 the CFOA said that retailers across the UK need to be aware that automatic fire sprinkler systems are the most effective way of protecting their businesses from the devastating effects of fire. The CFOA also says that the threshold limit of 20,000 sq meters before buildings are fitted with fire suppression systems is in adequate for most retail premises.
